The mission of our church can be summarized in the following statement: Escaping the world’s distractions, First Presbyterian Church of Oostburg is focused on making disciples by living uniquely, serving joyfully, and walking daily with Christ.

We seek to be a church that pursues what is most valuable in life – God himself. Jesus said that to know the one true God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – is eternal life (Jn. 17:3). Therefore, it is our desire that nothing in this world (as good as such things may be) would distract us from him, but that relationship with him would be the essence of our lives.

To be in relationship with God is to be a disciple of his Son, Jesus Christ. To be a disciple means to build one’s life on Jesus as Savior and Lord – to trust him and follow him and let him remake us to be like him. As a church, we don’t exist to please people, but to follow Jesus. As a Church, Jesus also calls us to reproduce this life in others by teaching them to obey his Word (Mat. 28:19-20)

To follow Jesus means our priorities and lifestyles will be different. As the exalted King of Kings, who will come again with an eternal kingdom, Jesus calls us to seek first his kingdom as what is most valuable and lasting. To live for such a kingdom means our lives will sometimes stand out as unique, as “aliens and strangers in the world” (1 Pe. 2:11). This uniqueness in our lives will come from God transforming us from within by renewing our minds so we may avoid the patterns of this world (Ro. 12:2).

To follow Jesus is to follow a Servant – One who came not to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45). As his disciples, we desire to be a people that serves one another and uses the unique gifts he has given each of us to work together as one body to advance his ministry (Ro. 12:4-8).

To follow Jesus means to “walk” with him – not merely as an idea or a system, but as the living Christ. As his disciples, we commit to feed on his word in the Scriptures, pray fervently, and seek his will in every part of our lives.
